The Mary Tyler Moore Show was unlike many television shows of the time because Moore portrayed Mary Richards, an independent, single, career woman who was not confined to a "traditional" role. Throughout the show's run, Moore tackled many social issues, including those relating to women's rights. In the first episode of Season 3, which aired in September 1972, Moore addressed the gender pay gap.
