As important as peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles are, they are not the most effective sources when you are researching about current events topics. Newspapers and other news organizations publish information about events almost immediately after they occur, whereas scholarly journal articles, books, and other academic sources can take months or years to publish information on these same events/topics. News sources can be located on library databases such as Central Search and NexisUni shortly after their publication. Additionally, Smiley Memorial Library offers print or digital access to several news journalism resources providing near-immediate access to current events news.
Smiley Memorial Library is proud to offer digital access to premier news and sports journalism for all CMU students, faculty, and staff. You can create free accounts through The New York Times and The Athletic by following the links below and using your current CMU email address to register.
Print editions of the following newspapers can be found in the Library.
Smiley Memorial Library also offers several databases and resources that can be used to find audiovisual material.
Reference materials are information sources that you can consult to find more information on a topic. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, and manuals are examples. Reference sources are critical when conducting background research on a topic, and Smiley Memorial Library offers several resources that can offer quick and easy access to reliable reference titles.
